No. 20 Saint Mary's Takes Down Men's Soccer

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 20 Saint Mary's was too much for Santa Clara men's soccer as the Broncos fell 3-1 to the Gaels Sunday afternoon at Stevens Stadium.

It was a defensive struggle in the first half with just three total shots before things opened up over the final 45. Saint Mary's (4-0-1, 2-0-1 WCC) put just three shots on goal all day but made them count, finding the back of the net each time.

Saint Clara (1-4, 1-3 WCC) tied the Gaels with eight shots overall and led in shots on target 4-3.

The scoring started in the 24th minute when Andre Hoglin sent a cross into the box that Andrew Rotter headed inside the far post to give the Gales a 1-0 lead.

Saint Mary's struck again just out of halftime. A free kick from way out in the 50th minute was sent near the six-yard box by Luis Sterobo and Boyd Curry got his head on the ball and off a bounce it found the back of the net.

Lucas Andrews made it 3-0 in the 69th with a long shot from outside the box that snuck inside the near post.

A minute later, Javier Ruiz Duran got the Broncos on the board in the 70th on a penalty kick to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Nicholas Lapinid, despite allowing the first goal of the season for Saint Mary's, made three saves.
