SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Oladayo Thomas and Caden Buckley scored less than two minutes apart in the second half to lift Santa Clara men's soccer to a 2-0 win over Gonzaga on Senior Day Sunday.
Thomas' goal in the 78th minute broke a scoreless game in what was up to that point a defensive battle between the West Coast Conference schools.
The goal was setup by Cole Motooka who delivered a cross into the box from the right wing where Thomas one timed a quick shot past the Bulldogs goalkeeper Johan Garibay for his first career goal.
Ninety seconds later, Caden Buckley added an insurance goal when he headed in a free kick from Javier Ruiz Duran.
Ruiz Duran lofted his free kick from 23 yards out on the left side towards a racing Buckley on the far post that beat the outstretched arms of Garibay, barely breaking the goal line to record his second goal of the season.
Thomas and Buckley each had a game-high two shots on goal for the Broncos (2-4, 2-3) who put six on frame for the game against three for Gonzaga (2-8, 0-5)
Andreu Cases Mundet recorded three saves for his first clean sheet as a Bronco. Garibay had four saves for Gonzaga.
Prior to the game, three Santa Clara seniors - Emil Christensen, Aran O'Brien and Tennyson Stevens - were recognized.
