Michael Hultquist on his Season Improvements

Written by James LeClercq '17

With his sophomore season in the books, EyeBronco reporter James LeClercq (JL) sat down with Michael Hultquist (MH) to talk about his biggest improvements in his game and what he looks forward to working on during his long and busy summer in Chicago. Hultquist also talks about looking forward to playing his favorite tournament at Stanford and what he uses as his lucky charm on the course.

JL: How was the adjustment from walking on the team last year to being a part of the team this year?

MH: The adjustment was a big one. I had to change my attitude a bit and transform my mental approach in order to realize that I was not only good enough to play at the next level, but that I was good enough to compete and actually contribute for the team at the collegiate level.

JL: How was your sophomore season?

MH: My sophomore year was up and down. I played well in certain rounds, but the consistency of my game is still a work in progress. I am happy with my game because of the improvements I have made over the past year, but there are goals that I have yet to meet.

JL: What were the biggest improvements in your game from last year?

MH: My biggest improvements from last year are twofold. My game has improved due to an increase in hours practicing and preparing. However, the bigger improvements can be attributed to a better mental approach and focus on the golf course during competitive rounds.

JL: Do you have any pregame rituals or routines?

MH: I don't really have too many pregame rituals or routines. During a tournament, I try to use certain numbered golf balls corresponding to the rounds being played. I also traditionally use a half dollar coin to mark my golf ball on the green for the whole tournament.

JL: What tournament are you looking forward to most next year?

MH: The tournament I am looking forward to the most next year is at Stanford. The field and the quality of competition is top notch and the whole tournament ranging from the volunteers to the officials is very professionally run which excites the players in the field.

JL: What are your plans going into the summer?

MH: This summer is going to be a very busy time for me. I will be working downtown as well as competing in many amateur events back home in Chicago throughout the summer. When I am not working or playing, I will be practicing as well as caddying at a local country club. Overall, it will be a busy but exciting summer.
