CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Santa Clara men's golf team shot a two-round total of 1-under 575 to claim 12th place after the first day of the 13th annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic, competed on the 7,218-yard, par-72 Cattail Course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
The Broncos scored 291 over the first 18 holes and followed with a 284 in the afternoon moving into their current position one shot behind Long Beach State and Southern Utah and three strokes behind James Madison. UC Davis leads the field at 20-under 556 with McNeese State and Colorado two shots behind.
Freshman Hayden Shieh paced the Broncos Monday with a morning round with a 3-under 69 and followed with an even-par 72 to tie for 16th at 141. Carlos Briones also placed under par at 1-under 143 after rounds of 75 and 68 to tie for 40th.
The competitive field had 45 of 100 golfers finish below par and another 10 score even par after 36 holes. Colorado's David Oraee and Mike Brockington of UC Davis share the lead at 8-under 136 heading into Tuesday's final round.
Drew Miller shot a second round 2-under 70 climbing 21 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 60th at 2-over 146 with a trio of Broncos – Gio Gandionco, Tyler Kertson and Michael Hultquist – all tied for 70th at 4-over 148. Hultquist is competing as an individual and his scores do not count towards the team's total.
Tuesday's final round tees off with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. (PT). The Broncos are grouped with James Madison, Southern Utah and Long Beach State from the ninth through 12th holes. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com and a recap will be posted on the Broncos website.
