SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Fresh off their first team title in three seasons, the Santa Clara men's golf team returns to action Monday competing in the Cal State Northridge-hosted Bill Cullum Invitational, to be played at the 6,819-yard, par-72 Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif.
The Broncos enter at No. 99 in the latest Golfweek.com rankings and are one of five schools in the 20-team field to hold a top-100 placement. Pac-12 schools USC (24), Arizona State (33) and Washington State (69) are the highest ranked teams scheduled to compete while San Diego comes in at No. 72. Teams and individuals will play 36 holes on Monday and a single 18-hole final round on Tuesday.
The Broncos shot an even-par 1,065 to win the six-count-five 13-team Utah Ogio Invitational on October 7. Four players placed among the top eight with freshman Hayden Shieh leading the way coming in fourth at 1-under 212. Sophomore Tyler Kertson had the best individual round of the tournament and the second-lowest of his career with a final round 5-under 66 to finish tied for eighth at 1-over 214.
Drew Miller claimed the first top-5 finish of his career tying for fifth at even-par 213 and Evan McLeod scored the lowest round of his career with a second round 68. In all four different players scored a round in the 60's to help the Broncos capture their first team title since winning the six-count-five Long Beach State Del Walker Invitational on March 8, 2011.
Gio Gandionco, Carlos Briones, Shieh, Kertson and Miller will comprise the Broncos' lineup for the Bill Cullum Invitational while Michael Hultquist will compete as an individual.
