Santa Clara’s Hayden Shieh Qualifies for NCAA Golf Championships

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara freshman Hayden Shieh (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose) was selected to compete in the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. Shieh was awarded an at-large berth into the tournament based on his outstanding season, which included a title at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational in November, four top 10 finishes and a 72.31 scoring average.

"It's pretty cool," said Broncos head coach Rob Miller about Shieh's selection. "This is a great experience for him to compete with the best golfers."

Shieh is one of 10 individual qualifiers in the 75-player, 13-team field that will compete at the San Diego, Calif. regional May 14-16, playing 54 holes at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals not on those qualifying teams who will compete in the NCAA Finals, which will be hosted by the University of South Florida and is scheduled for May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.

The team's top finisher in six of 12 events this season, Shieh competed in all 36 rounds with a team-best 14 sub-par scores. He became the first Bronco individual medalist since 2011 when he won the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational in November by one stroke with an 8-under 205. Shieh earned the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year and was named to the All-WCC Team for his outstanding play.

"This is great four our program," Miller noted. "It's a start getting an individual this year and we want to have our team competing next year."
