Men's Soccer Falls At San Diego

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Up against West Coast Conference opponent San Diego for the second time this season, the Santa Clara men's soccer team fell at USD, 4-1, on Friday night. The Broncos move to 6-7-3 on the season and 2-2 in the WCC while the Toreros improve to 9-4-4 and 5-0 in WCC.

Santa Clara returns to Buck Shaw Stadium on Sunday to host Loyola Marymount at 2 p.m. If fans cannot make the Senior Day match, fans can watch the game with live commentary on TheW.tv for free.

The Broncos were outshot by the Toreros, 16-12, with Santa Clara tallying an impressive seven shots on goal. Sophomore Edson Cardona scored his third goal of the season in the 86th minute for the Broncos off of a penalty kick while Ryan Masch put three chances on frame. Dylan Autran, Jared Hegardt, Steve Eneme and Max Ornstil added to the Bronco offense. Goalkeeper Carl Carrwik collected his third start of the season against USD and grabbed four saves during the 90-minute match.

San Diego's goals came in the 9th minute by Connor Brandt, in the 40th by Brandt for a second time; Torrey DeArmas scored the third in the 44th minute and DeArmas put away the fourth in the 87th minute for his second goal of the night.

"Going into the match tonight, we knew we needed a good result and we always play to win," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast. "I thought that in training all week we looked great. But, unfortunately, San Diego put some pressure on different areas and played in behind us. We had some nice chances, and in the second half, the guys renewed their fight. We were pressing to get more chances and definitely put in a strong effort in the end."

Rast and the team look ahead to regrouping for Sunday's home match. "Every time we go out on the field, each opponent will bring different challenges," said Rast. "It just wasn't our night, and USD is very experienced. In the end, we will have to learn from that and get better moving forward."

The Toreros proved their experience and comfort level at home on Friday. Racking up three goals in 45-minutes put the Broncos in a difficult position during their fourth WCC match of the year.

Senior keeper for Santa Clara, Carrwik, was not going down without a fight and gave his team a push of momentum when he saved a San Diego penalty kick in the 62nd minute, denying Brandt a potential hat trick.

After several corner kick opportunities for the Broncos, Santa Clara was awarded a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Drew Illijevski, the Torero keeper, blocked Masch's attempt and saved the rebound shot by Masch.

Still riding on second half momentum, Cardona put the Broncos on the board when he put away another penalty kick chance in the 86th minute passed Illijevski.

Santa Clara's final push was cut when the clock hit 90 minutes.

GAME NOTES: A total of seven yellow cards and two red cards were given … attendance was 548.
