Six Broncos Receive All-WCC Team Honors

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After finishing up the 2014 season on the road at San Francisco on Saturday, six players on the Santa Clara men's soccer team were named to the All-West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Teams. Ryan Masch and Kendall McIntosh picked up All-WCC Second Team honors while Carlos Delgadillo and Steve Eneme made the All-WCC Freshman Team. In addition, several Broncos also were Honorable Mentions, including Valdemar Andersen, Max Ornstil, Delgadillo and Eneme.

"It is great that six players were recognized by the WCC coaches because each of them had good quality in their play that helped our team compete this season," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast. "Even though we didn't have the success we wanted, these guys were some of our most consistent performers, and it was great that the other coaches in the conference recognized that."

Picking up Second Team honors, Masch appeared in seven matches for the Broncos this season and immediately made an impact on the pitch. Scoring two goals and tallying one assist, Masch was a game-changer in the 2-1 win over Portland on Oct. 19. He took the free kick to assist Delgadillo's goal in the 18th minute. Then the junior put the game away in the 88th minute off of a free kick 25-yards out, which was featured as the No. 1 Top Play of the Week for TheW.tv on Oct. 21.

"Ryan got to play in a couple of the conference matches that counted toward the championship," said Rast. "Ryan is an impact guy who can score goals and move the ball. I think that in the few games he got to play in, he definitely made an impact and was somebody opponents always had to pay attention to. Unfortunately, he didn't get to play out the entire conference schedule, but based on his performance during the games he did play, it's great that the coaches recognized him."

McIntosh, also named to the Second Team, was the starting goalkeeper for Santa Clara for the second year in a row. Anchoring the Bronco defense for 13 matches this season, the junior shut out opponents four times and limited them to a .097 shot percentage. McIntosh was named WCC Player of the Week on Sept. 15 and his save in the Cal match was featured as the No. 2 Top Play of the Week on the conference's Top Play Tuesday. He has 48 saves on the season with a .762 save percentage in his junior campaign.

"Kendall is similar to Ryan in a sense that we performed well with Kendall in goal, and it is great that he gets recognized for his quality of play," said Rast. "Unfortunately, he wasn't able to finish out the entire conference schedule, and because of that, I think it limited our ability to compete for the championship. He probably could have been recognized a little higher but was at least recognized for the quality that he brings."

In his first season with the Broncos, Delgadillo quickly found a spot in the starting line-up. The freshman from San Jose, Calif., led the team with four goals and five assists, tallying 13 points in the 2014 season. Appearing in 18 matches with 10 starts for the Broncos, Delgadillo was a major producer of the Bronco offense, attempting 22 shots and 12 shots on goal. His goal in the Portland match earned the No. 3 spot on the WCC's Top Play Tuesday countdown on Oct. 21.

"Throughout the year, Carlos had some great games for us, scoring some goals and getting assists," said Rast. "He is somebody that you always had to keep track of and pay attention to. Based on that, it is great that he was recognized on both teams – definitely deserving of that. I think his future is super bright and we are excited to work with him in the off season with a season under his belt."

After utilizing a redshirt season in 2013, Eneme had a break out first year on the field for Santa Clara. Appearing in 17 matches and picking up nine starts, the York, Pa., native scored three goals and attempted 25 shots for the Broncos. Head coach Rast constantly commented on Emene's ability to hold the ball at the forward position and make the right plays for his team. Eneme came in clutch against UC Riverside on Sept. 14, scoring his first collegiate goal and the game-winning goal. Then against LMU on senior day, he scored the tying goal in the 87th minute to send the game into overtime.

"Steve also had a good season and scored goals for us, doing a lot of work up front to be dangerous," said Rast. "The tandem of Steve and Carlos up top is going to be very good for us. So we are excited to have both of those guys in our lineup going forward for years to come. I think we will even more impactful next year."

Awarded an Honorable Mention in his first year at Santa Clara, the 6-5 defender from Aarhus, Denmark, was consistently solid in the back line this season. Andersen started and played in 16 matches and picked up his first collegiate assist in the 1-0 victory over Riverside. His organization as a center defender limited opponents to a .417 shots on goal percentage.

"Val was very consistent for us in the backline," said Rast. "I was happy to see him get recognized. He also didn't play out the entire conference schedule so it was great for him to be recognized."

Ornstil had a solid third year as a Bronco. Appearing in 15 matches and starting 13, the midfielder from Oakland, Calif., put up three goals and one assist for seven points in the 2014 season. He scored the game winner in the 1-0 win over Northern Illinois on Sept. 7.

"Max was just a warrior for us, putting in so much work," said Rast. "He gutted through an enormous workload that he took on for our team. He played in a couple of different positions that we needed him to play in to help our team become more competitive and have the chance to be successful. Max is very recognizable and deserved some mention in our conference standings."

Glenn Vass, Brennan Castro, Matt Escobar, Parker Holland, Victor Magana, McIntosh and Ornstil were also all honored for their academic achievements this year.
