Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Welcomes Nine Newcomers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara women's cross country looks ahead to the 2019-20 season and welcomes nine true freshmen to the team. Hannah Aguirre, Greta Anderson, Sasha Codiga, Jackie Cruz, Elizabeth Elcik, Maiya Fujiwara, Hayley Harrison, Luciana Lenth and Adelaide Vergnolle will enter their first season with the Broncos this fall.

"I'm thrilled with our incoming class," associate head coach Pete Cushman said. "It brings us depth, talent, and range, and they're going to come in and have some great leadership from our veteran runners. As is typical, this recruiting class is excellent in the classroom, and will continue our tradition of hard-working student-athletes who can and will excel as students, as athletes and as serving members of our community."

Coach Cushman: "Hannah brings a ton of experience and success in both cross country and track and field. She competed in her high school state cross country championships four straight years, highlighted by a 20th-place 6A finish her senior year, and twice competed in the Oregon State High School Track and Field Championships. She improved each year, and ended her high school career with top-10 finishes at 1,500 and 3,000 meters. She's a great student, a consistent and steadily-improving athlete, and will be a great addition to our program."

Greta Anderson | Jesuit High School | Portland, Oregon

Coach Cushman: "Greta was a scorer for one of the best cross country teams in the nation, but her best skill set is her speed on the track. She has very good range from the 400 to cross country. She placed fourth in the Oregon State High School Track and Field Championships 400-meter race, and was a key member to Jesuit's state title in the 1,600-meter relay. Greta has a bright future in the middle distances on the track at Santa Clara. Her competitiveness is exceptional."

Sasha Codiga | Flintridge Preparatory School | Pasadena, California

Coach Cushman: "Sasha also has a range of skill sets, and should have a more immediate impact on the track. She helped guide her team to a top-three finish at the CIF State Championships last fall, and has shown she has a lot of potential in both cross country and the middle-distance events on the track. Sasha will be a great fit within our program and has a lot of potential."

Coach Cushman: "Jackie is our first Texas recruit during my tenure at Santa Clara. She's going to be a very positive contributor to our team culture. She brings a very infectious positive attitude, she's a hard worker, and she made a lot of big improvements during her last year as a high school athlete, highlighted by a first-place finish at the TAPPS 6A State Championships. She has a lot of potential, and we are excited to have her in the program and eager to see her athletic abilities grow."

Coach Cushman: "Elizabeth came to track and field by way of soccer last year. We've always liked having athletes with multi-sport backgrounds, and we think her team sport experience will make her a great teammate and a positive contributor to our 800-meter track group. Elizabeth is a high-character person who will help make our team better."

She finished her senior year with some of the best races of her career, which included a runner-up spot at 1,500 meters and third place finish at 800 meters in the Hawaii State Track and Field Championships. She has shown the ability to excel in both cross country and track. Maiya immediately connected with everyone on the team during her visit; she will follow in the footsteps of another Punahou athlete and one of our current team captains, Noe Obermeyer."

Coach Cushman: "Hayley had an incredible breakthrough during her senior track season, and we are looking forward to seeing her continue that momentum into her college career. Her skill set is geared toward middle distances on the track, but we are confident she will also develop into a strong cross country runner. She's a great student, a hard worker, and will continue a long tradition of Central Catholic student-athletes at Santa Clara."

Coach Cushman: "Luciana has been a model of consistency and improvement and it's all due to her meticulous attention to detail, hard work, and desire to get better. I'm excited for Luciana's infectious, hard-working attitude on this team. She will continue to grow and improve as an athlete and will make those around her better. She was a key contributor to her team's fourth-place finish at the Oregon State Cross Country Championships in 2018."

Coach Cushman: "Adelaide is our first recruit from South Carolina, where she was one of the top athletes in her division all four years of her high school career. She qualified for the state cross country championships each of her four years, and placed in the top 10 twice. She has one state title in track and field to go along with multiple top-five finishes. She brings a ton of enthusiasm for the sport and Santa Clara, and we are excited to have her on the team."
