Scales Sets 800m Track & Field Program Record at Cal Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. — In only his third competition with Santa Clara track & field, Alex Scales became a program record holder Saturday. The Colorado transfer clocked an 800-meter 1:52.26 to take second place overall and first among collegiate athletes at the Cal Opener.

Scales bested teammate Brennan Lagerstrom's 1:52.55 from the 2019 Brutus Hamilton Challenge.

Two other Broncos outraced their collegiate fields at Edwards. Janie Nabholz turned in a stellar 3,000-meter debut, posting a 9:55.97 (second overall), making her the second-fastest Bronco at that distance in program history. Xander Olivero's 1,500-meter 3:55.20 was good for third overall.

The meet featured the host Golden Bears, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and UC Davis in the Division I field.

FROM THE COACHES

Head coach Felipe Montoro (men): "There were lots of really good individual performances in every event today. Collectively, we were able to keep the focus on the right things to facilitate placing as high as possible in each race. Alex's school record was one of several highlights for the group."

Associate head coach Pete Cushman (Women): "Janie's 3k was really solid; she's a savvy racer. She had been nervous about doing a new event, but handled it well, and the performance highlights her range and overall ability. She has the ability to be impactful from 1,500k to 5k. This meet overall was a good tune-up for what I consider our big race of the winter quarter."
