Men’s Golf Coach to Retire

SANTA CLARA, Calif.Rob Miller, Santa Clara's men's golf coach the last 15 seasons, has announced his retirement.

Miller led the Broncos to 13 team titles, the only two NCAA Championship appearances in school history and produced nine golfers who earned All-West Coast Conference accolades, including three tabbed as the top freshman in the league.

"I think I'm walking away from a program that's in good shape and respected," Miller said. "I didn't know how long I'd do it since I had no experience. I had to figure out what it took to bring the program up to a level of respectability. It was a long process to upgrade our status around the country to get invitations to the top tournaments."

Miller, a Bay Area native, improved the team's practice playing privileges and schedule to consistently appear in the top 100 in the country, enabling the program invites to some of the top events.

After earning a trip to the NCAAs in 2006, Miller again led the Broncos to a regional appearance in 2018.

His player development included guiding Hayden Shieh to three NCAA Regional individual appearances, first-team All-WCC four times and 2014-15 WCC Freshman of the Year honors, and current senior Matt McCarty to a pair of first-team all-league selections (2017-19).

Those two players, along with Derek Ackerman, a two-time honorable mention All-WCC performer (2017-19), helped steer the Broncos to the NCAAs two years ago. Santa Clara was ranked No. 51 nationally by Golfstat.com heading into the Raleigh regional at NC State where the Broncos finished 11th.

"I would like to thank Rob for his dedication and service to Santa Clara over the past 15 years," director of athletics Renee Baumgartner said. "He has built our men's golf program and developed a number of golfers who have gone on to play professionally. His student-athletes have consistently done well in the classroom. I wish Rob well in his retirement."

A graduate of UC Berkeley, Miller was the 2006 co-WCC Coach of the Year when he led the team to the a third-place showing at the league championship and a trip to the NCAA West Regional at Arizona.

"I'm thankful that I got to work with some great people at Santa Clara and appreciative of the chance to coach the guys we've had in the program over the years," Miller said.

A search for Miller's successor is underway.

"I'll do whatever I can to help the program in the transition to a new coach," Miller said.
