Men’s Golf Tied For 10th After First Round Of Saint Mary’s Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Playing his first event of the fall season, junior Jack Avrit carded a 2-under 69 to lead Santa Clara men's golf to a team score of 4-over 288 and a share of 10th place after 18 holes of the Saint Mary's Invitational.

There is little separation in the middle of the 16-team pack with just 12 swings separating third-place Arizona (278) from 13th place Fresno State and Toledo (290). Colorado State took the clubhouse lead at 267 with BYU nine swings back.

The return of Avrit, who sits tied for ninth, came at a good time for the Broncos, who had only one other player shoot par on the 7,002-yard, par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course. Senior Matt McCarty was level with a 71.

"It was kind of a bad day for us," head coach Rob Miller said. "It happens though. We'll rebound and move on. It's only the first round and there's plenty of golf left."

Sophomore Konrad Brauckmeyer carded a 1-over 72 to tie for 42nd.

The two other team members, juniors Berk Harvey and Zack Kaneshiro, each shot 5-over 76.

"We can't afford to have two guys play poorly in the same round," Miller said. "Hopefully it doesn't happen twice in the same tournament."

Competing as an individual, freshman Alex Conley scored a 2-over 73 for a share of 56th place.

Second round action on Tuesday gets underway at 7:45 a.m. PT with tee times from holes No. 1 and No. 10. Live scoring is available by clicking here.
