CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's golf carded the fourth-lowest score of Tuesday's final round with a 6-under 282 lifting the team to a 12th-place finish at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic with an 875 total.
The Broncos' score was two off the pace set by titlist Tennessee and runner-up San Diego State, and matched that of No. 5 ranked Texas A&M. They were able to make up shots on most of the field but finished just one-swing out of the top-10.
"It was a good day today," head coach Rob Miller said. "We didn't move up the standings but we got closer to a few teams. It's a step in the right direction. Overall I'm pretty happy with how things ended up."
Three Broncos shot under par on Tuesday leading the squad to its lowest round of the spring season.
Senior Matt McCarty was the team's top individual finisher. A final round 3-under 69 lifted him into a tie for 21st at even-par 216.
Also carding a 69 on Tuesday was junior Jack Avrit, who ascended 25 spots on the leaderboard to grab a share of 34th at 3-over 219. He shared that standing with, among others, teammate Berk Harvey, who moved up eight spots with a 2-under 70.
"Placing in the top third is a good finish in this field," Miller noted.
Freshman Alex Conley had his lowest score of the tournament with a final-round 2-over 74 leaving him tied for 69th at 225. Sophomore Konrad Brauckmeyer also tallied a 74 ending with a 226 total.
"For the most part everyone played good, consistent golf the entire tournament," Miller concluded.
The Broncos return to action on March 26 at The Goodwin, scheduled to take place just up the road at Stanford Golf Course.
