LIHUE, Hawai'i – Santa Clara men's golf recorded its lowest score of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate with Saturday's final round 4-under 284 to take 14th place with a tournament total of 879 (+15).

Gentler conditions Saturday at the 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course allowed scores to plummet. The Broncos climbed one spot on the leaderboard as one of 14 teams in the 21-team field to score below par in the final round.

"Overall it was just okay," head coach Rob Miller said of this team's finish. "We didn't have a great tournament and we failed to beat some teams ahead of us in the rankings. We didn't take advantage of an opportunity."

Individually the Broncos were led by senior Matt McCarty, who carded a final round 1-over 73 to finish 54 holes at even par 216, tied for 27th with a pair of golfers. New Mexico's Sam Choi broke away from the field with a final round 66 to claim individual medalist honors by three swings with a 10-under 206.

The Broncos got a boost on Saturday from Zack Kaneshiro, who was disqualified from winning the individual title due to a clerical error in the first round. The junior shot the lowest score of the tournament for the Broncos with a 3-under 69 on Saturday.

"It was nice for the team," Miller said of Kaneshiro's round. "He had nothing to play for individually, but he showed what kind of teammate he is."

Juniors Berk Harvey and Jack Avrit each shot 1-under 71 on Saturday to finish in the top half of the field. Harvey earned a share of 47th with a 4-over 220 total while Avrit was a shot behind his teammate at 5-over 221 tied for 57th.

The Broncos are back in action on March 9 competing in the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic. The two-day event will be played at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista.
