Strong Field Awaits Men’s Golf At John A. Burns Intercollegiate

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Competing against a stellar field in their second tournament of the spring season, Santa Clara men's golf is off to the Hawaiian Islands for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate beginning Thursday. The three-day event will be contested on the 6,991-yard, par-72 Wailua Golf Course on the island of Kaua'i.

The 21-team field features four squads ranked in the top-16 and 13 among the top-100 in the recent Golfstat.com poll.

No. 7 Arizona tops the list of challengers followed by Texas A&M (11), North Carolina (14) and BYU (16). Following their fourth-place tie at the inaugural Orange County Collegiate Classic last week the Broncos are ranked No. 88.

"This is unusual for us to be playing in a tournament with four teams ranked so highly," head coach Rob Miller said. "It's a strong field and it gives us a chance to make up some ground in the rankings."

Paced by freshman Alex Conley, who earned his first top-10, the Broncos rallied from a first-round 314 to shoot 10-over across the final 36 holes forging a fourth-place tie in the 17-team OC Classic field.

In order to combat the wind gusts that are present on the Wailua course, Miller made a change to his five-player rotation inserting Berk Harvey at the No. 5 spot. He'll join Conley, Matt McCarty, Zack Kaneshiro and Jack Avrit to make up the Broncos contingent. Sophomore Konrad Brauckmeyer will compete as an individual.

"We didn't handle the wind very well in the first round last week," Miller noted. "We were disappointed with the result. The last two rounds were not that bad and we want to see some of that momentum carry over."

First-round action gets underway with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. HST (6 a.m. PST) on Thursday. Live scoring for the tournament is available here.
