CHULA VISTA, Calif. – With a two-round total of 17-over 593, Santa Clara men's golf completed the first day of the 19-team Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic tied for 12th-place.

Competing in their strongest field of the entire season to date, the Broncos were consistent with an opening 298 and a second-round 295 to grab a share of 12th with Long Beach State and Sam Houston State, five swings outside of the top-10 and 18 strokes behind clubhouse leader San Francisco.

"We played okay, nothing special," head coach Rob Miller said. "We beat the teams we were supposed to beat and toppled a few that were ahead of us in the rankings."

Miller used the past tense since a 90 percent chance of rain is in the forecast leaving Tuesday's final round on the 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club layout in jeopardy of being cancelled.

Senior Matt McCarty was the Broncos top individual performer with a second-round even-par 72 moving him into a tie for 26th at 3-over 147.

Sophomore Konrad Brauckmeyer matched the team's low score of the day with a 72 in the afternoon, moving up 20 spots on the leaderboard following an opening 80.

"Matt had a good second round and it was nice to see Konrad come back after struggling in the morning," Miller said.

Junior Berk Harvey had the team's low opening round score at 1-over 73 and finished with a 76 to grab a share of 42nd place at 5-over 149. Junior Jack Avrit had a pair of 75s and freshman Alex Conley went 75-76 to end the day a shot behind his teammate.

"Alex had a big finish on the last three holes (birdies) in the first round that helped us," Miller said. "Everyone contributed. We have a chance to finish in the top-10 if we play tomorrow."
