A Big Day For Santa Clara Men's Golf Program

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Friday marked a great day for the Santa Clara men's golf program. Former Bronco golfer Derek Ackerman picked up the first win of his three-year professional career and current senior Jack Avrit punched his ticket to the PGA Tour Canada with a top-10 finish at the PGA Tour Canada Q-School USA West 2.

Ackerman, a four-year player for the Broncos from 2016-2019, picked up the victory on the PGA Tour Australia, winning the inaugaral The National PGA Classic with a four-day total of 15-under 65-69-71-68--273. The San Francisco native birdied five of his first 10 holes in the opening round to get things started on the right foot. He closed with a clutch 68 in the final round to hold on to a two-stroke victory. With the win, Ackerman picks up two years' exemption on the tour.

Avrit also had a week to remember at the PGA Tour Canada Q-School in San Jacinto, Calif. The senior finished the tournament tied for eighth at 2-under 71-66-74-75--286. That total included a bogey-free, six-birdie second round. In the final round, Avrit was able to come through in the clutch by securing a birdie on his very last hole, the par-5 18th, to earn his PGA Tour Canada Card on a first-half-season status.

Avrit and the Broncos will look to finish the regular-season strong at the El Macero Classic in Davis, Calif. April 20-22 before gearing up for the WCC Tournament in Henderson, Nev., April 28-30.
