UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - The Santa Clara men's golf team sits in fifth place after the first day of the 2008 WCC Championships. The Broncos are just eight shots back of second place heading into the final round. They are being led by Jonathan Keane and All-WCC selection Scott Travers in the top ten.

Keane started his day at even par through the first nine before an eagle on 12 and two birdies in the final three holes put him at a three-under 69 for the first round. Keane powered through the conditions in the second round, coming away with a five-over 77 to finish the day tied for fifth at +2.

Travers, who was named to one of the four All-WCC spots at the start of the day, struggled at the start, shooting eight-over through his first 27 holes. But Travers came on strong at the end with five birdies in his final seven holes to bring him to finish one-under in his second round and three-over for the tournament, tied for eighth.

Tim Lynch and Jimmy Cacho both tied for 25th at eight-over. Lynch had a great first round of 73 and a second round 79. Cacho posted dual rounds of 76.

Alex Bon rounds things out for the Broncos at +12 for the tournament after rounds of 77 and 79.

"We had a couple of good performances out there today," said head coach Robert Miller. "With Keane's 69 in the first round and Scott shooting a 71 in the second round, which was tough in those conditions. We just need the rest of the team to step up. This last round is one where you can stumble and we want to be one of the teams moving up."

The third and final round begins tomorrow morning and can be watched on live scoring on Golfstat here.
