Five Broncos Earn WCC Spring All-Academic Honors

June 25, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The West Coast Conference announced its 2008 Spring All-Academic teams today with five Santa Clara student-athletes earning a spot on the team in baseball, women's crew, and men's and women's golf. The women's golf team led the way with seniors Hilaire Fouts and Corey Utsurogi. Sophomore Alex Bon represented the men's golf team, while junior Heather Lynch earned the honors for women's crew. Sophomore designated hitter and catcher Geoff Klein rounded out the list as he received honors for baseball.

Fouts compiled a 3.56 grade-point average as a communications major and earned her second All-WCC honor after the Broncos placed third at the conference championships in April. Fouts tied for 11th at the event, which was just two strokes behind teammate and fellow All-WCC honoree Utsurogi. Fouts was tied for second after the first round of play with a one-over 73, her best round of the year.

Utsurogi earned a 3.32 cumulative GPA as a finance major. During the season, she played in every tournament for Santa Clara and finished the year ranked second on the team in scoring average. Utsurogi produced two top 10 finishes, including her second place finish by one stroke at the UC Santa Cruz Spring Invite.

Men's golfer Bon helped the Broncos to a first place finish at the Anteater Invite in February and compiled two top 20 finishes on the season. An undeclared business major with a 3.77 GPA, Bon put together a 10th place finish at the Anteater Invite with rounds of 73 (+1), 71 (-1) and 75 (+3). He also finished 37th at the WCC Championships in April.

Coxswain Lynch earned a place on the women's crew all-academic team for her 3.56 cumulative GPA. Early in the season, Lynch aided the Broncos in their second place finish at the Stanford Lightweight race. The Broncos also took fifth place at the WCC Championships. For her efforts in races and in the classroom, Lynch was named a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) 2008 National Scholar-Athlete.

Sophomore Klein helped the Bronco baseball team to one of its best seasons in the last 11 years as Santa Clara finished third in the WCC and had its first over 30-win season since 2003. A Huntington Beach, Calif. native, Klein compiled a 3.28 GPA majoring in combined sciences. He produced a seven-game hitting streak from March 15-29 that included one double, one triple, a home run and six RBIs. He made most of his appearances as the team's designated hitter but served as catcher in four contests, recording 26 putouts, two assists and a perfect fielding percentage.
