SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golfer Scott Travers, who will be a sophomore this fall, shot a 153 over two rounds at the U.S. Amateur Tournament Championship this week at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. After carding a 77 on day one, he posted a 76 in his second round to tie for 161st place in the prestigious tournament.

Travers put together two solid rounds at the tournament, but he could not quite make enough puts to reach the match play stages of the tournament. At +13 he missed the cut by six strokes in his first appearance in the tournament. The Trabuco Canyon, Calif. native was one of five players from the Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif. to become eligible for the tournament, scoring a 146 in the 36-hole qualifying tournament earlier this month.

The US Amateur is the oldest USGA championship, and was originally played at the Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island in 1895.

He is the second Bronco in the last two years to participate in the event. Jong Yoon represented Santa Clara in last year's championship held at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. Yoon had a strong tournament, but fell one stroke short of the cut after the first two rounds.

The Broncos men's golf season begins on Sept. 10 at the Saint Mary's Invitational in Livermore, Calif.
