Layton, Utah-- The Santa Clara men's golf team finished fifth Tuesday after sitting in second place going into the last round of the Purple and Red Invitational. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after rain limited play to just one round on Monday. Sophomore Scott Travers was the low man for the Broncos in the tournament, shooting a 71 and 70 respectively to finish at -3 for the tournament and tied for 6th overall.

Travers started the day strong, birdying the last three holes of the back nine to sit at -4 for the day, but then ran into trouble. "I had a rough stretch coming in at the end," said Travers. He bogeyed 16, 15, and 17 before finally birdying the final hole of the tournament.

Sophomore Jimmy Cacho was right behind his teammate, finishing at -2 for the tournament after shooting a pair of 71's to finish tied for 11th. "I didn't give myself that many close birdie opportunities," said Cacho. "I struggled to two-putt for par at times." In fact, Cachos only bogies came on three-putts.

Senior Blair Myers, who was in seventh place after the first round, shot a 74 to go with his first round 70 to end up at even par and 19th place for the tournament.

Sophomore Alex Bon (+8) was the last Bronco to score, shooting a 74 and 78 for the tournament. Senior Tim Lynch finished at +13 with rounds of 77 and 75.

With the tournament only consisting of two rounds, the Broncos might have benefited from a third round. "We could've played better than we did today," said Miller. "We played well in the first round and not as well in the second, so obviously we would've liked another shot at it."

In the Broncos first tournament of the year they were in fifth place going into the last round and ended up in ninth. Today saw another slide in place by the end of the tournament. "We need to get to a point where these last rounds help us instead of going backwards," said Miller.

With three Broncos finishing in the top 15, there certainly is potential for the team this season. "We had three good scores," said Miller. "We just need that fourth." Bon, the fourth place finisher this week was the team's lowest scorer in the first tournament of the year, so that is not a far stretch.

The team will see their next action in two weeks at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by Cal on October 8 and 9.
