Men's Golf Hosts SCU Invitational Next Week

Oct. 19, 2007

The Santa Clara men's golf team will host their annual Santa Clara Invitational next week at Silver Creek in San Jose. The tournament will feature 15 teams, including No. 33 Oklahoma and other east coast teams making their way to the SCU Invitational for the first time such as Loyola and British Colombia. The Broncos are just off a seventh place finish at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate in which they overcame difficult conditions to have their best finish to a tournament this year.

Leading off for Santa Clara will be Scott Travers. Travers is currently rated the No. 88 player in the country by Golfstat.com. Before last tournament, where no player shot under par, Travers had gone five straight rounds without going over par.

Next for the Broncos will be Jonathan Keane, the teams best finisher at Oklahoma last week. Keane recorded his best finish of the year there, shooting a +13 to finish tied for 12th place.

Tim Lynch will be the final member of the Broncos this week to have played in a tournament. Lynch played in the Purple and Red Invitational and the Alister Mackenzie Invitational earlier this year.

Two players for Santa Clara will be participating in their first collegiate tournament. Shaun Pienkos, a sophomore is coming off an injury this year and did not play in any of the tournaments last year. Newcomer freshman Stewart Loop was just recently added to the roster and will look to contribute this weekend.

Noticeably absent from the lineup is Jimmy Cacho, ranked 153rd in the country by Golfstat.com who will be taking the week off after playing in every event for the Broncos so far this year. Freshman Tyler Ichikawa will be doing the same. Still missing from the lineup is Alex Bon who is recovering from knee surgery.

"Even though we're depleted a little bit, I still expect a strong showing from our team this week," said head coach Robert Miller. "We know the course well and the field isn't as strong as we've faced in past weeks. I think we can finish really high; top five for sure."

The tournament will kick off on Monday, October 22 with a shotgun start, meaning players will start on every hole on the course and finish around the same time. Tee times begin at 7:45 a.m.
