SANTA CLARA, Calif.
– Santa Clara women's basketball has officially opened practice ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Last season the Broncos finished 14-11 overall and 9-8 in the West Coast Conference, earning the fourth seed in the conference tournament and advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2016. They accomplished all of this despite their first eight games on the road and playing the majority of their home games in Santa Cruz due to Covid.

The Broncos averaged 65.4 points per game as a team while shooting 41.7-percent from the field and 34.5-percent form beyond the arc. Defensively, they forced 17.1 turnovers per contest and collected 9.2 steals per game.

Leading scorer Lindsay VanAllen, who scored 13.0 points per game last year looks to team with returner Merle Wiehl who added 11.6 ppg. Wiehl's 5.1 rebounds per game are the most amongst returners. Top assister Ashlee Maldonado and her 3.5 apg return to help facilitate the offense.

Both VanAllen and Wiehl were Second Team All-WCC a season ago and Ashley Hiraki, who scored 5.2 ppg, being named All-Freshman. Wiehl was also named to the WCC All-Tournament Team.

Freshmen Rafailia Stergaki and Sydney Bevington look to make an impact their first year with the team.

The season opens with an exhibition against San Francisco State November 3 and home. The regular season will tipoff November 10 against Cal Poly at 5 p.m. in Leavey Center.
