Women's Basketball Tops Pacific to Stay Hot at Home

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Being down three starters didn't rattle Santa Clara women's basketball as they took care of Pacific 75-64 to move to 9-1 at home on the season.

The Broncos (10-7, 4-3 WCC) rode a career-high tying 32 points from Lindsey VanAllen and a career-high 17 from Danja Stafford to compensate for being without Ashley Hiraki, Lana Hollingsworth, and Lara Edmanson.

It was the second 32-point performance in the last three games for VanAllen who finished the day 10-of-19 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line while adding six rebounds and three assists. Stafford was 6-of-9 from the field, including a pair of triples, and added six rebounds as well.

After a slow start to the game, Santa Clara finished the first quarter on a 20-6 run and would hold the lead the rest of the afternoon. The Broncos shot 43.1-percent from the field and were 7-of-18 from behind the arc on the day.

Another slow start to the third quarter saw the Tigers (4-13, 1-5 WCC) score the first eight of the half and get within 42-38 but the Santa Clara stars of the day, Stafford and VanAllen, responded with back-to-back layups. A 13-3 run later in the quarter took most of the drama out of the rest of the game.

Santa Clara also did a good job taking advantage of 15 Pacific turnovers, having a 26-6 edge in points off turnovers. Merle Wiehl chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds with Bryce Nixon scoring seven and setting a career-high with seven boards.

Liz Smith led Pacific with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting with Anaya James and Liz Elliot both adding 11. Three others scored six points each. The Tigers shot 42.9-percent as a team and were 6-of-17 from downtown.
