Cold Finish Sinks Women's Basketball at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – Playing for the third time in five days, Santa Clara women's basketball went cold late in the fourth quarter and fell at San Francisco 67-60 Monday.

With 4:28 left in the game, Lindsey VanAllen, the WCC Player of the Week, knocked down her third 3-pointer of the game to put the Broncos (8-5, 2-1 WCC) up 57-55 but they wouldn't make another field goal the rest of the way.

The Dons (7-10, 1-4 WCC) took advantage by using a 6-0 run to get back on top for good. Amalie Langer scored the first four points, and six overall in the final four-and-a-half minutes and Ioanna Krimili knocked down five free throws in the last 24 seconds.

Krimili led all scorers with 16 points and Claudia Langarita added 14 with Kennedy Dickie scoring 10. Langer and Jessica McDowell-White both scored nine.

Despite the trouble scoring, Santa Clara was down just three before Krimili was able to ice it at the charity stripe. The Broncos even got off four 3-pointers on their last two possessions but couldn't get anything to fall. In all, they missed their last seven shots.

The cold finish sank Santa Clara to a 33.9-percent mark on the day from the field while San Francisco shot 45.6-percent. Despite a 38-16 edge in points in the paint for the Dons, he Broncos had a chance to make up that difference as they won the battle of the boards 36-29 and 14-5 on the offensive glass but held just a 9-8 advantage in second change points.

VanAllen finished with a team-high 15 points and added five rebounds. Ashley Hiraki and Danja Stafford both added 12 with Stafford leading the team with eight rebounds and Hiraki grabbing seven.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 65-44 all-time against San Francisco.
  • VanAllen is averaging 16.7 ppg over the last three games, her first action since December 14 due to an injury.
  • The Broncos were without Lexie Pritchard who was injured at Long Beach State. A timetable for her return is uncertain. Ashlee Maldonado is also out and will miss the entire season.
