Women's Basketball Wins in Final Seconds at LMU

LOS ANGELES – Santa Clara women's basketball won a thriller on the road, beating LMU 62-61 in the final seconds Saturday afternoon.

It was the Lindsey VanAllen show in the fourth quarter as she scored 12 of the Broncos' (12-11, 6-7 WCC) 15 points in the quarter, including two free throws with two seconds on the clock that proved to be the difference in the game.

The Lions (8-15, 3-10 WCC), who trailed almost the entire way, finally evened the score by scoring the first six points of the fourth and would take the lead twice in the period, including at the 24 second mark following a 3-pointer from Jasmine Jones and jumper from Ariel Johnson that made the score 61-60.

On the ensuing possession for Santa Clara, VanAllen missed a jumper but Johnson would commit a costly turnover that led to a foul by Nicole Rodriguez to send VanAllen to the line for the win.

VanAllen led all scorers with 21 points on 7of-16 shooting, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc while pulling down six rebounds. It was her eighth 20-point game of the year and 13th in a row in double-figures.

Also in double-digits for the Broncos was Lana Hollingsworth with 14 and Danja Stafford who scored 10 to go with a team-best seven rebounds. As a team, the Broncos shot 40.4-percent from the floor but struggled from 3-point land at 5-of-21.

LMU actually started its game-tying run with the last bucket of the third quarter and Johnson continued it with two baskets to start the fourth before Khari Clark closed it out to make it 47-all with eight minutes to go.

Johnson led the Lions with 19 points and Clark added 12. Rodriguez and Jones both added 11 with Mark grabbing a game-high 11 boards. LMU was 41.9-percent from the field and 5-of-15 from downtown.

LMU went cold over the final 2:52 of the first half, going just 1-for-9 from the field to end the second quarter, but Santa Clara couldn't take advantage and got just a 3-pointer from VanAllen. The Broncos would go the final 2:39 of the half without scoring but still took a 32-24 advantage into the break thanks to a 6-0 run early in the quarter before the offenses went quiet.
