SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball opened the 2021-22 campaign with a solid all-around 74-41 exhibition victory over San Francisco State Wednesday night in Leavey Center.
The team's two top scorers from a year ago, Lindsey VanAllen and Merle Wiehl, led all scorers with 17 apiece. Wiehl added 13 rebounds for the double-double and was 8-for-15 from the field while VanAllen was 7-of-13 from the floor.
Also in double figures was Lara Edmanson who scored 14 and Lana Hollingsworth with 12.
As a team, the Broncos shot 44.3-percent from the field and won the rebound battle 50-28. They also forced 24 Gator turnovers and turned them into 27 points.
San Francisco State was held to 29.2-percent shooting and 19.2-percent from beyond the arc.
Jolene Armendariz led the team with 11 points and Alexsandra Alvarado added 10. Both Mya Blake and Samaria Velasquez scored eight.
NOTES
- The last time the two teams met was an exhibition in 2017. The Broncos won that matchup 74-39.
- Eleven different Broncos got on the floor with each playing at least nine minutes.
- Of the 11 players that saw time, nine scored.
