San Diego, Calif.-- Playing in the final day of the Triton Tournament, the Santa Clara women's water polo team dropped two heartbreakers by a combined two goals. The Broncos fell to No. 10 Hartwick 9-8 and then 8-7 to Cal State Bakersfield.
Trailing the entire game against Hartwick College, the team battled back and had a couple of chances at the end of the game but could not capitalize.
Christie Miller notched a hat trick and had two steals to go with her goals as well. Emily Bonk, Elizabeth Perry, Taylor Harkins, and Brianna Anderson all had goals for the Broncos as well. Amy Lamb chipped in with three assists and a steal and Claire Linney had two kickouts drawn. Randahl Capurro blocked 12 shots in the cage with one steal.
In the second game again Bakersfield, the Broncos could just not get over the hump after going into the fourth quarter tied, but fell behind and could not make up the difference. "Bakersfield is a good team, but didn't play well," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We have to do better when we see them again later in the year."
Linney had her second hat trick of the season while Bonk, Perry, Harkins, and Meg Zimmerman all scored one goal. Lamb had another three assist game while Anderson and Kendal Hildebrand each had two. Capurro had another solid game in goal, with a season high 13 blocks.
"Three one-goal losses is a tough weekend," said Wilbur.
The Broncos will get a chance to bounce back next Saturday, Feb. 16 against Sonoma State at 1 p.m. at home.
