Santa Clara Overcomes Sonoma State 8-6 at Home

Feb. 16, 2008

Santa Clara, Calif.-- Despite the slow start at home, Santa Clara's women's water polo team battled back to take down Sonoma State 8-6 on a beautiful Saturday game at Malley Pool.

With Sonoma jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead, head coach Keith Wilbur called a timeout to try and collect his team. "They had one player who was shooting really well from the outside, so we had to figure out a way to shut her down," he said.

The Broncos held thier opponents to just one more goal in the first half and were tied at 4-4 going into the second half. They took a 6-5 lead into the final quarter and held on for an 8-6 victory.

Leading the scoring was Claire Linney and Kendra Betke with two goals apiece. "Kendra made a couple real big shots for us in a very close game," said Wilbur.

Also scoring was Emily Bonk, Amy Lamb, Brianna Anderson, and Christie Miller, all with one goal. Miller also threw in three assists, a steal, three kickouts drawn, and a five-meter penalty drawn for good measure. "Christie just had a monster game," said Wilbur.

Randahl Capurro continued her streak of great games in goal with 12 blocks and a steal.

"We had a tough start, but we battled back," said Wilbur. "It was good to get a close win after last weekend."

The Broncos get another chance at victory tomorrow when they take on Cal State Monterey Bay at noon.
