Santa Clara Sinks CS Monterey Bay 7-2

Feb. 17, 2008

Monterey Bay, Calif.-- The Santa Clara women's water polo team took down Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday 7-2 in a defensive battle that saw an abundance of steals.

Trailing 1-0 after the first quarter, the Broncos put the clamps down, shutting out Monterey Bay until the fourth quarter, gradually pulling away for the victory.

Claire Linney led the way for Santa Clara with two goals, two steals, and two assists. Jenny Knutson also had two goals and two assists. Elizabeth Perry and Christie Miller both had a goal and three assists, and Brianna Anderson chipped in with a goal.

Randahl Capurro was excellent in goal, allowing just two scores while blocking 11 shots with two steals and an assist as well.

"We played a very good defensive game," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Monterey Bay had an all-american and we held her to just one goal."

Although Santa Clara took home the win, Wilbur says the team still has work to do on the offensive end. "We created some really good looks," he said. "We just need to shoot better."

The Broncos will play their final home game of the season Wednesday at Malley Pool, under the lights at 7 p.m. against UC Santa Cruz.
