DAVIS, Calif. - On the first day of the 2008 Aggies Shootout at UC Davis, the Santa Clara women's water polo team won their first game against Cal State San Bernardino 10-5 and fell to Cal State Bakersfield 5-4. The Broncos are now 13-7 on the season and 11-5 against the WWPA.
Amy Lamb notched another hat trick on the season in the game against CS San Bernardino. Three other players had multiple goals as Emily Bonk, Kendra Betke, and Brianna Anderson all scored twice. Meg Zimmerman and Taylor Harkins both scored one goal. Zimmerman had five kickouts drawn in the game, by far the most any Bronco has had in a single game this season.
In the cage, Randahl Capurro had 18 blocks and a steal.
"I felt like that was a good game for us, and one of our better offensive games on the season," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We ran our halfcourt well and converted half of our man-up opportunities, which you like to see."
In the final game of the day, Santa Clara had trouble getting their offense going and managed just four goals against CS Bakersfield. Allie Lamb, Amy Lamb, Christie Miller, and Harkins all scored one goal apiece. Jenny Knutson had two steals, a kickout drawn, and a five-meter penalty drawn. Elizabeth Perry also had three steals with a kickout drawn.
Capurro blocked 14 goals in the game while allowing just five goals.
"For some reason we just can't figure Bakersfield out, our offense just doesn't click when we played them," said Wilbur. "Their players played well and their goalie played a great game, but we have to figure out how to get the ball in the back of the net."
The Broncos will finish off this weekend's tournament with games against Colorado State at 9:15 a.m. and No. 11 Loyola Marymount at 2:15 p.m.
