Broncos Win Twice On First Day of Slugfest

March 1, 2008

Santa Cruz, Calif.- The Lamb sisters dominated the first game of the day as the Broncos took down Sonoma State 11-3 and Elizabeth Perry scored twice in a grinder to beat Cal State San Bernardino 5-4 in the first day of Slugfest.

Santa Clara had beaten Sonoma State 8-6 earlier in the year, but on Saturday, everything clicked for the team. "I was happy in every aspect of the game," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "It was our best all-around game of the season. It was fun to play."

Amy Lamb scored four goals and had three assists while her sister Allie Lamb had two goals and two assists, accounting for over half the team's points. Kaylie Pezzuto scored twice while Kendra Betke, Christie Miller, and Taylor Harkins all scored one goal apiece for the Broncos as they won going away.

Defensively, Kendall Hildebrand had three steals, Miller had four steals to go along with her goal, and Jenny Knutson had two kickouts drawn and a five-meter penalty drawn. Randahl Capurro had 14 blocks in goal and also notched a steal and an assist. Wren White played the last half of the fourth quarter and recorded two blocks as well.

The second game against Cal State San Bernardino was what Wilbur called a "gritty win" for the team.

"Not everything was clicking like it was in the first game," said Wilbur. "But you have to win those too, and I'm glad we took this one."

San Bernardino took a 2-0 lead after the first quarter, and Santa Clara put the clamps on, holding them scoreless in the second quarter. Amy Lamb tied the score up at 2-2 one a last second goal before half.

The team went up 4-3 after the third quarter on another quarter-ending goal, this time by Harkins with ten seconds left. "We did a good job in the closing moments," said Wilbur.

Santa Clara took a 5-3 lead in the fourth before San Bernardino closed the gap to one with a few minutes remaining in the game. It was a defensive battle to the end, but the Broncos came out on top.

Randahl Capurro had a season high 16 blocks on the game, while surrendering just four goals.

Perry had two steals to go with her two goals in the game and Emily Bonk, Amy Lamb, and Harkins supplied the rest of the scoring with one goal each.

The Broncos finish off Slugfest on Sunday with another two game set. They play Whittier at 7 a.m. and end the day against Colorado State at 2 p.m.
