LOS ANGELES - After overcoming a four-goal deficit in the second half, Santa Clara lost to UC San Diego in heartbreaking fashion as the Toreros scored with .05 seconds left in regulation to win 8-7. The loss gave the No. 5 seed Broncos fourth place in the WWPA for the second year in a row.
Emily Bonk notched a hat trick for Santa Clara, scoring two of her three goals in the first quarter and her third to tie the game a 7-7 with 1:15 to go in the game. Also scoring for the Broncos was Jenny Knutson, Kendra Betke, Claire Linney, and Christie Miller. Randahl Capurro had five blocks in the game for Santa Clara.
Santa Clara traded goals with San Diego in the first quarter, which also included the team's only lead of 3-2 before ending the quarter tied at 3-3. The Toreros took a 4-3 lead into the half and came out firing, scoring the next three goals to take a four goal lead. The Broncos came back by scoring the next four goals, including three in the fourth quarter, but Stephanie Bocian netted a 6-on-5 goal with .05 second left in the game to keep Santa Clara from taking it into overtime.
Santa Clara finished their season 19-13 and 15-8 against the WWPA.
