ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Sophomore Hayden Shieh birdied two of his final five holes to finish the opening round of the Albuquerque regional of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships tied for third at 1-under-par 71. The event is being contested on the 7,555-yard, par-72 UNM South Championship Course.

Playing as the top-seeded individual among the five competing with 14 teams, Shieh is tied with four players, two strokes behind Arizona State's Jon Rahm and Rigel Fernandes of South Florida.

"Hayden was really solid today," Broncos head coach Rob Miller said. "He's in good shape and you can't ask for anything more."

The low five teams and the low individual not on one of those squads will advance to the NCAA Championship finals in Eugene, Ore., beginning May 27.

"They don't make it easy on the individuals," Miller exclaimed. "The easiest way to advance is to win the tournament."

Shieh will tee off Tuesday's second in the final grouping, scheduled to begin at 9:34 a.m. PDT.
