Trip Across the Bay on Tap for Women's Basketball

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming off the first win under new head coach Bill Carr, Santa Clara women's basketball returns to action Monday at 7 p.m. at Cal. The Broncos made a furious fourth quarter comeback in the season-opener to start the season with a victory.

Santa Clara is 10-31 all-time vs. Cal with the first meeting coming during the 1963-64 season. It was the first game for the women's basketball program and the Broncos came away with a 35-28 win. The last meeting was a 75-58 Bears victory in 2011-12. The last win for Santa Clara over Cal came in 2000 when the Broncos won in Berkeley 77-73.

In the season-opener, Santa Clara trailed Idaho State 69-52 with eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter but used an 18-0 run to come back and finished the game on a 20-4 run to get the win.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (1-0) shot 42.9 percent from the field in the opener and was 2 of 7 from beyond the arc. The Broncos knocked down 38 of 48 free throws and picked up 13 assists and 13 steals.

Emily Wolph led Santa Clara with 20 points on 5 of 9 shooting and was 9 of 10 from the free throw line. She added three assists and three steals.

Lori Parkinson added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while collecting four steals, three assists, and a pair of blocks. Morgan McGwire added 14 points and eight boards.

Marie Bertholdt, who fouled out with 50 seconds to go in the third quarter, added 12 points and five rebounds.

THE BEARS
Cal (1-0) topped Saint Mary's in the season-opener 74-67. The Bears shot 47.4 percent from the field and hit seven 3-pointers. They picked up 10 steals and forced 18 turnovers.

Asha Thomas led the team with 19 points on 6 of 10 shooting and 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. Courtney Range scored 14 and had a team-high nine boards with three assists and three steals.

Mikayla Cowling had a team-best six assists to go with eight points. Kristine Anigwe scored 11 and grabbed six boards.
