McGwire Scores 22 But Women's Basketball Falls on the Road to San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Despite a season-high 22 points from Morgan McGwire and a double-double from Marie Bertholdt, Santa Clara women's basketball fell at San Jose State 75-64 Sunday afternoon.

Santa Clara (1-2) won the battle of the boards 47-39 and dominated with 32 points in the paint to San Jose State's (1-3) 12 but the Broncos were undone by turnovers. They committed 21 and only forced 10.

Despite the turnovers, Santa Clara got the deficit to 52-49 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

San Jose State came back with a 6-0 run and got the lead to double-figures at 61-51 with six and a half to go. The Broncos couldn't cut the lead to less than five the rest of the way and the Spartans knocked down their free throws in the final minutes.

Dezz Ramos led all scorers with 30 points on 10 of 20 shooting and was perfect in 10 chances from the charity stripe. She also dished out nine assists.

Rachol West was the only other Spartan to score in double-figures. She finished with 13 and five rebounds.

McGwire led Santa Clara with 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the floor and added eight rebounds. Bertholdt scored 13 but struggled from the floor, going 3 of 13. She grabbed 11 boards for the double-double. Lori Parkinson scored eight and added 12 boards as well.

San Jose State went on a 10-0 run spanning the end of the first quarter and the start of the second. Ramos hit three jumpers and Baird capped it with a layup at the 7:46 mark to give the Spartans a 20-13 lead.

Emily Wolph and Naomi Jimenez hit back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the second quarter and Bertholdt added two free throws to put the Broncos on an 8-0 run and tie the game at 23-all with 3:10 remaining in the opening half. The Spartans, however, came back and scored the final five points of the half.

A 9-0 run to start the second half saw Santa Clara claim a 34-30 with seven and a half minutes to go in the third quarter. McGwire scored seven of the points, highlighted by a 3-pointer.

Santa Clara returns to the court Friday at 4 p.m. vs. Marquette at the Tiger Turkey Tipoff Thanksgiving Tournament in Stockton.
