Women's Basketball Can't Complete Sweep of LMU

LOS ANGELES – Playing without senior forward and starter Marie Bertholdt due to injury, Santa Clara women's basketball dropped a 61-50 game at Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon. A difficult second quarter proved too much for the Broncos to overcome.

Santa Clara (9-10, 4-4 WCC) turned the ball over 23 times on the day which led to 23 points for LMU (8-11, 3-5 WCC). The Broncos were able to force 16 turnovers but only turned them into seven points.

LMU ended the first half on a 13-0 run behind six points from Cheyenne Wallace. Jackie Johnson connected on a layup as the first half ended to put the Lions on top 30-17. They outscored Santa Clara 17-4 in the second quarter as the Broncos went the final 6:47 without a point. They missed their final six shots of the half and turned the ball over eight times in the period.

Leslie Lopez-Wood led all scorers with 16 points and knocked down three 3-pointers. Johnson scored 14 with nine rebounds and four blocks while Andee Velasco scored 10.

After Lori Parkinson got the Broncos back on the board to start the second half, LMU scored eight in a row to take a 38-19 lead with 1:35 to go in the third. Santa Clara turned the ball over six times during the run.

Parkinson led Santa Clara with 13 points and eight rebounds. Leading scorer Emily Wolph only had five points and was just 1 of 9 from the field and 1 of 7 from beyond the arc, not hitting a field goal after the 9:50 mark in the first quarter.

The Broncos started the game well, getting on top 13-7 after a triple from Parkinson with 2:12 to go in the first. The Lions then went on a 10-0 run over the final two minutes of the first quarter and the first minute of the second quarter to take a 17-13 lead that they would never surrender.

Santa Clara continues its road trip Thursday at 6 p.m. at BYU. The Broncos will try to beat the Cougars twice in the same season for the first time in program history.
