Late Run Not Enough for Women's Basketball Against Oklahoma State

LAS VEGAS – In the opening round of action at the Play 4 Kay Shootout, Santa Clara women's basketball fell to Oklahoma State 67-53 Monday evening.

The Cowgirls (9-1) led the entire way after starting on a 7-0 run, thanks in part to holding a 22-4 edge in points off turnovers despite just a 20-16 advantage in turnovers forced. They scored on each of the first six turnovers committed by the Broncos (4-5) for a total of 12 points.

Despite being down 49-27 in the second half, Santa Clara used a 14-2 run to end the third quarter and start the fourth to make the game interesting. Taylor Berry knocked down a 3-pointer and Emily Wolph drilled three consecutive of her own from deep to make the score 53-45 with 5:48 to go.

The Bronco offensive then went cold. They missed five straight from the field and didn't score for over three and a half minutes. The Cowgirls took advantage and hit five consecutive from the floor to put the game away.

Lori Parkinson led Santa Clara with 19 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the field and grabbed nine rebounds to go with four steals.

Wolph knocked down four 3-pointers for 12 points while Taylor Berry scored 10. Morgan McGwire grabbed 10 boards for the Broncos.

A 3-pointer by Kylee Jensen for the last bucket of the first period propelled Oklahoma State to a 16-4 run over six minutes to build its lead to 33-15 halfway through the second quarter. Kyla Martin scored all four points for the Broncos with a layup and a pair of free throws.

Jensen led all scorers with 21 points on 9 f 14 shooting and added nine rebounds and three blocks. Mandy Coleman registered a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while Karli Wheeler scored 11.

The Broncos return to action tomorrow vs. No. 21 South Florida at 12:30 p.m.
