Young SCU Men’s Golf Team Looks to Build Momentum in Tahoe

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University men's golf team makes a trip to Lake Tahoe to compete in the University of Nevada's 2011 Wolf Pack Classic, Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3-4.

"Our goal this fall is to get up to speed – we are playing with a lot of young players," said Santa Clara head coach Rob Miller. "We are really focused on getting guys playing time and getting them used to playing at this level, the freshmen, and the sophomores quite honestly."

Miller's 2011-12 team is led by All-West Coast Conference senior Cory Mehl and classmate Ronnald Monaco, but the Broncos must receive consistent scoring from its younger players as the season moves forward.

The Broncos – who are playing with three underclassmen - were limited to just 18 holes at the University of Washington's Kikkor Classic due to rain in the Seattle area last weekend.

"It was unfortunate to get rained out on the 36-hole day at the University of Washington last week because those are valuable experiences for the guys," said Miller. "One of our top players, Scott Lowe, is coming off Mononucleosis and is trying to shake off some rust in his game and we are really looking forward to getting him back out there into competition. Colin Gunstream and Brett Komoto, our two freshmen; we're trying to get competitive rounds in for them."

The Broncos are hoping for good weather in Tahoe, where only five of the team's six players will compete. All six players will make the trip to Cabo San Lucas the week of Oct. 24-31 to play in the Cabo Collegiate, an event co-hosted by SCU.
