SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mex. – Santa Clara University's men's golf team surged into the top tier of the Cabo Collegiate following Round One action Thursday morning in Baja. Bronco sophomore Scott Lowe shot an even-par 71 to push SCU into a tie for fourth overall in a strong, 12-team, national field.
"Even though we are hosting this tournament it's not like we have any advantage; this is the first time everyone here is playing the course," said Santa Clara head coach Rob Miller, who moved the second-year event to the Nicklaus designed Club Compestre Golf Course this season.
Lowe's even-par 71 was good for eighth among a 65-man field. All four of Santa Clara's scoring players were among the top 25, including freshman Colin Gunstream and senior Ronnald Monaco, who posted rounds of 3-over 74.
"It was pretty windy out here, so I'm really happy with the end results today," said Miller. "This was Scott (Lowe's) best round of the year and Colin has really emerged as a good player for us as a true freshman."
The tournament, which includes eight teams ranked among the nation's top 100, continues with single rounds on both Friday and Saturday.
