SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Looking to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the 26th time, Santa Clara women's soccer has been picked to finish second in the West Coast Conference by the league's coaches behind last year's champion BYU. Santa Clara picked up two of 10 first place votes. Senior goalkeeper Andi Tostanoski and junior defender Brittany Ambrose were also named to the 2015 All-WCC Preseason Team.
"It's always nice to get recognition from your fellow coaches on how well they think you'll do," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "Andi Tostanoski is going to be great for us coming off a Goalkeeper of the Year in the conference. She's a senior captain and we're looking forward to her making a positive difference for us. Brittany Ambrose is unfortunately out for the year so we'll miss her production. We lost a lot of firepower over the last few years but we have a lot of good candidates to step up. Congratulations to BYU on being picked first. They're a very good team and we look forward to having them at home this year. We're ready for a tough conference schedule."
Tostanoski, the 2014 WCC Goalkeeper of the year, played almost every minute in net for Santa Clara and allowed 21 goals for a 1.06 GAA. She made 74 saves for a .779 save percentage while picking up eight solo shutouts, tied for most in the conference, and contributing the majority of the minutes to two more. This is the second time a Bronco has won Goalkeeper of the Year, after Bianca Henninger in 2011.
Ambrose was second on the team with six goals and 15 points. She tied for second on the team in assists with three as well. She scored four game-winners, including one in the 4-3 comeback win vs. Fresno State.
The Broncos open their season Fri., Aug. 21 at 5 p.m. at UC Davis. The home opener comes Fri., Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. vs. Oklahoma.
