Women's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. – With every game meaning so much in the race for the West Coast Conference crown, No. 15 Santa Clara women's soccer tied Saint Mary's 0-0 on Friday afternoon. The Broncos turned up the offensive pressure with 15 minutes remaining in regulation but couldn't capitalize on any of their dangerous chances.

Julie Vass led the Broncos (11-5-2, 4-1-2 WCC) with a pair of shots on goal. Andi Tostanoski picked up six saves. The Gaels (7-7-4, 2-3-2 WCC) were led by three shots on goal from Mary Fraser. Julia McDonald made seven saves.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Santa Clara currently sits in fourth place in the WCC standings but is just two points behind second place and four behind first place.

"I'm really proud of our performance today," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "We played really well but the Saint Mary's goalkeeper played even better. She made some exceptional saves and they played tough defense against us."

The Broncos had a chance to break the scoreless tie in the 34th minute when Jordan Jesolva got a through ball in the box. She gathered the ball just outside the six-yard mark but her shot was deflected wide.

Off a corner kick in the 79th minute, Santa Clara had the best chance of the second half. Three Broncos got their head on the ball with Kellie Peay finally putting a shot on net but McDonald was right there to make the stop.

Tostanoski thwarted a good chance for Saint Mary's in the 83rd minute. Fraser got behind the defense and was inside the six-yard box and her shot to the near post was saved on a dive.

Back-to-back incredible saves by McDonald in the final minutes of regulation saved the Gaels. In the 87th minute Vass had a shot from the left of the box that was sent to the far post but McDonald got her fingertips on it to send it wide. Less than a minute later Jenna Holtz took a pretty shot but McDonald jumped to make the save.

Santa Clara had the better chances to score in both overtime periods but couldn't come through with the game-winner.

Santa Clara returns to the field Sunday, Nov. 1 at 2:30 p.m. at Pacific.
