SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Mariana Galvan of Santa Clara women's soccer has been named West Coast Conference Player of the Week after scoring two double overtime winners over the weekend. Galvan scored the winning goal vs. LMU with 44 seconds left on the clock on Friday and then on Sunday scored the golden goal early in the second overtime period.
"It was truly a team effort from beginning to end," said Galvan. "We were fighting for every inch for each other and we got the result. Together everyone achieves more. I couldn't have done this without my team. I am thankful and blessed to be part of this family."
"I'm very happy and proud of Mariana," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "I would think she was an easy choice for Player of the Week after scoring two overtime goals. It's also impressive that we've played three overtime games this year and she's scored the game-winner in each of them. She's gone through so many injuries that to make such a big difference in our program says a lot about her toughness."
Galvan defined clutch over the weekend for Santa Clara (9-4-0, 2-1-0 WCC) with her two double overtime game-winners. The first came Friday vs. LMU in the 110th minute. Off a rebound Galvan found the back of the net for give the Broncos the 2-1 win. On Sunday vs. Pepperdine she was back at again in the 103rd minute. A pass from Hailai Arghandiwal found Galvan in the box and after a touch the Broncos were experiencing deja vu with a win, this one by a score of 1-0.
Galvan has scored three goals and is tied for second on the Broncos. All three game-goals have been game winners in double overtime. The first came at Kansas on Sept. 4 in a 1-0 Santa Clara victory.
Santa Clara had previously won back-to-back overtime games Oct. 10 and Oct. 23, 2009 and this was the first time in program history they won back-to-back double overtime contests. The last Bronco with two overtime winners in the same season was Jordan Angeli in 2009 when she scored game-winners vs. Georgetown on Sept. 6 and vs. Saint Mary's on Oct. 18. Galvan also becomes the first Santa Clara player with three overtime winners in the same season.
