Weatherholt Selected in NWSL Draft

SANTA CLARA, Calif.Dani Weatherholt of Santa Clara women's soccer was selected with the first pick in the fourth round, 31st overall, in the National Women's Soccer League draft by the Orlando Pride on Friday.

In her Bronco career, Weatherholt appeared in 86 games and made 82 starts. She scored 10 goals and added five assists for 25 points. She picked up four game-winners, including vs. No. 6 Stanford in 2015.

"I am so grateful to have the opportunity to continue playing the game I fell in love with as a little girl," said Weatherholt. "I am still in disbelief that my childhood dream is becoming a reality. I can't thank my family, the Santa Clara community, and my coaches enough for their relentless support and for continuously challenging me. The hard work has just begun and I can't wait to push myself every day to be a better athlete and person."

"We are very proud of Dani for being drafted," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "She continues a tradition of Santa Clara players being drafted into the professional league. Dani will make any team better at any level. She doesn't make headlines but always helps her team win. I'm sure she'll do that for the Orlando Pride. We're very excited about her opportunity."

As a senior Weatherholt scored three goals and added two assists while starting every game. She scored two game-winners and converted a penalty kick. She was named Third Team All-West Region and First Team All-WCC.

As a junior she was named All-WCC honorable mention and as a freshman was All-WCC honorable mention and named to the WCC All-Freshman team.

Weatherholt set a career-high with five goals as a freshman. She scored a goal at Stanford in the second round of the NCAA tournament that season.
