Broncos Outlast Jayhawks 1-0 in Double Overtime

HIGHLIGHT | Galvan's Match-Winner

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Playing overtime for the first time this season, Santa Clara women's soccer beat Kansas by a final of 1-0 in double overtime. The win puts the Broncos at 3-2-0 on the season while the Jayhawks are 2-2-1.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. vs. Oklahoma for the home-opener.

"This was a great win for us today against a very good Kansas team that looks like they're headed back to the NCAA Tournament," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "I'm very happy with the tough performance that the team gave. The heat index was close to 100 degrees and we played a gutsy game. I'm very proud of Mariana for her great goal in overtime and Andi made a great save at the end of regulation to preserve the tie and set up our overtime win. I'm very proud of the team."

Santa Clara was outshot by Kansas 15-14 and shots on goal were even at 5-5. Mariana Galvan led the Bronco offense with the lone goal. Jenna Roering added four shots and two on goal. Andi Tostanoski picked up five saves in net.

With time winding down in regulation, Tostanoski showed why she is the defending WCC Goalkeeper of the Year. The Jayhawks took a shot from 10 yards out that deflected off of a defender. Tostanoski dove to knock it down and stayed with it to prevent a rebound to a streaking Kansas player.

Dani Weatherholt stole a pass in the attacking third with two minutes to go in overtime and dribbled to 20 yards out before blasting a shot. It went straight to the goalkeeper to keep it scoreless. The game went into a second overtime without a goal.

Right out of the chute in the second overtime Jenna Roering got a ball off to the side of the goal near the six-yard box. The goalkeeper deflected her shot and Kansas was able to clear.

In the 103rd minute Santa Clara finally broke through. A ball was centered into the box and not cleared completely by Kansas. Galvan used her chest to stop the ball before hitting a shot to the upper right corner of the net to give Santa Clara the win.
