Jan. 27, 2007

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara Broncos got their 2007 season underway on Saturday against local rival, 11th ranked San Jose State. In what was a great battle and a good test for the Broncos, they kept the game close into the third quarter, before the Spartans broke away for the 10-5 victory.

The Broncos received goals from freshman Rochelle Stowe, Allie Lamb, Emily Bonk, Jenny Knutson and senior Katie Radvanyi. Lamb and Bonk also added one and two kickouts, respectively, to the Broncos offense as they fought to keep the match close. Brianna Anderson had four steals, and junior Randahl Capurro had a notable performance in the cage for the Broncos with six blocks, an especially strong outing against an 11th ranked opponent like San Jose State.

Despite the loss, head coach Keith Wilbur was very encouraged by the team's performance.

"It was a tough battle, but it was also our first game," Wilbur said. "We did some good things and now we know what we need to work on. Overall, it was a great test for us to see where we're at so we can get better."

The Broncos will be looking for a strong rebound tomorrow wheb they take on Cal State Monterey Bay and Hartwick in Monterey, Calif. The Cal State Monterey Bay match begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Hartwick match at 1:00 p.m.
