Broncos Celebrate Senior Day With 12-4 Win Over UC Santa Cruz

April 15, 2007

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Celebrating Senior Day and their last home game of the 2007 season, the Santa Clara women's water polo team fired on all cylinders to come away with a 12-4 victory against conference rival the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, bringing their overall record to 18-12. Sophomore Amy Lamb scored four goals, and Andrea Evans had a standout defensive day while scoring a goal for her seventh straight game. Overall the Broncos worked as a cohesive unit and got another important victory.

"In the game we tried to implement what we have worked on all season," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "To continue to fine tune our play, maintain a solid defense and all around good play. Today we did work on our six on five plays, but overall we just wanted to stay strong and keep doing what we have been doing all season."

Twenty seconds into the first quarter Amy Lamb scored the Broncos first goal. Minutes later Lamb scored again with an unassisted goal. Junior Emily Bonk assisted Katie Radvanyi with a mid-quarter goal to put SCU up 3-0. The Slugs replied back with a goal, but Bonk set up senior Andrea Evans to give Santa Clara a three-goal cushion once again.

The Slugs rebounded with their second goal, but the Broncos took over the rest of the first half. With 34 seconds left in the first quarter Radvanyi scored another goal and SCU led 5-2 after one.

In the second quarter Claire Linney and Elizabeth Perry both scored, and Bonk assisted another Lamb goal.

After halftime the Broncos solidified their win with Lamb assisting junior Kendra Betke's goal, and then scoring her fourth goal of the day. Radvanyi assisted junior Christie Miller's goal to end the Broncos third quarter scoring. The Slugs were able to find the net just once in the quarter against second half goalie sophomore Katie Gilmartin.

In the fourth quarter both the Broncos and Slugs were able to score a goal a piece. The Broncos goal was courtesy of freshman Keely Baldwin.

The Broncos will finish the regular season on the road next weekend. They first travel to Sonoma State on Saturday, April 21 for a 1:00 p.m. game. The following day, Santa Clara closes out the regular season with games at Cal State East Bay and Pacific.
