RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Santa Clara women's water polo senior goalkeeper Grace Kavanagh made eight saves to keep things competitive from start to finish, but ultimately the 6-seeded Broncos were unable to pull off the upset against 3-seed LMU, falling to the Lions 9-4 in the opening round of the Golden Coast Conference Championship Tournament.
Behind a pair of first period goals by Mia Battilega and Kate Rodman, the Broncos went into the intermission trailing just 5-2. LMU (15-11) then scored three more in the third period to take an 8-2 advantage into the final period. Kelly Frumkin and Chloe Morrision each scored in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to make up the difference.
Morrison tallied a team-high two points on her goal and an assist.
LMU saw eight different players find the back of the net with Marialena Seletopoulou scoring a pair to lead both teams.
