Broncos Unable To Complete Comeback In WCC Tournament

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Santa Clara women's water polo gave Azusa Pacific everything they could handle in Saturday's fifth-place game in the Golden Coast Conference Championship Tournament, but were unable to finish the comeback attempt despite great play down the stretch.

Entering the fourth period deadlocked at 9-9, Azusa Pacific mounted a three-goal lead at 12-9 and later 13-10 within the last four minutes of action as they locked to lock down the win. However, the sixth-seeded Broncos were not ready to go down without a fight as second team All-WCC pick Lauren Baglietto scored two goals with her last coming with just 1:21 remaining to make it a one-point affair. While the defense was able to hold on down the stretch, unfortaunately the offense was unable to find the back of the net to send the game to extra time.

The Broncos finish the season 7-21 and 2-5 in conference play.

Baglietto scored three goals to lead the team while Kate Rodman, Chloe Morrision and Lauren Voss each scored a pair. Voss also had three steals to finish with a team-best five poins.

Santa Clara found themselves down 4-1 after the opening period before they were able to turn up the dial in the second and tie the game at 6-6 with 2:21 remaining. Azusa Pacific tacked on one more goal to take a 7-6 lead into the half.

In the third period, Azusa Pacific's Milena Guzman Ortiz scored to make it 9-7 with just 1:11 to play in the period, but the Broncos had an answer with Chloe Morrision and Rodman each scoring inside the final minute to tie the game at nine.

Grace Kavanagh and Liyara Senadheera split time in the net and combined for nine saves.
