Seventh Inning Comeback Comes Up Just Short for Softball at Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. – On the final day of the Stanford Invitational, Santa Clara softball fell to Stanford by a final of 5-3. The Broncos are now 5-17 on the season.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., March 13 at 11:30 a.m. vs. Western Carolina and at 2 p.m. vs. Utah State in the San Diego Classic.

McCall James (0-3) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 1.0-plus inning. James allowed three runs on four hits with two walks. Jordan Newell was 1-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead the offense.

Haley Snyder (8-7) started for Stanford and picked up a win in the complete game. Snyder allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Kayla Bonstrom was 3-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored to lead the offense.

Stanford scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a quick lead. With one on and one out, Bonstrom hit a double to left center that brought in the first run of the game. After an out and a walk put runners on the corners, Jessica Plaza single through the left side to make it 2-0.

After James allowed the first two runners to reach in the second she was lifted for Briana Rios. Stanford would push across another run in the inning to take a 3-0 lead after two innings.

The Cardinal added single runs in the fourth and sixth to get on top 5-0 headed into the seventh.

Santa Clara put a rally together in the seventh that came up just short. With one out, Chiara Biagini was hit by a pitch and Kelli Tatum followed with a walk. Newell came through with a three run bomb to center to get Santa Clara within two. Gianetta France followed with an infield single to bring the tying run to the plate but the next two batters went down to end the game.
